Matfield Green in Chase County, Kansas, once had a station with a stockyard. Cattle is no longer hauled in or out by train, and the ingenious labyrinth of pens is heavily damaged by a prairie burning gone out of control. Prairie grasses and sumac have taken over the site. But present owner, Bill Mc Bride, artist/architect, uncovered the area. A couple of old timers living next door came over to re live their days of working at the stockyard. The still used tracks, the heavy timber posts, iron gates and dip tank form a wonderful 3D-‘drawing’ and act as a mnemonic installation: a work of art.
